Classic Muscle Cars and Oddballs Among 1300 Cars up for Auction

The ‘Generous Collection’ includes Corvettes, German luxury cars, and an antique horse carriage—all with no reserve.

  • The “Generous Collection” is a hodgepodge assortment of all kinds of cars, and it’s going up for auction, as first reported by The Drive.
  • The collection is massive—as many as 1300 cars—all of which will be sold at no reserve.
  • The owner amassed the bulk of the collection by simply paying what sellers were asking, helping out all sorts of folks in the process.

Collector Greg Rusk of Alabama had that most dangerous of combinations: a magpie’s roving eye for treasures and a wallet healthy enough to indulge it. Perhaps more

pleasingly, he also seems to have the soft heart of a philanthropist rather than a bargain-hunter’s sharpness, all of which added up to a vast and incredibly varied car collection—as in, even Rusk doesn’t know how many cars he owns. Now, all of them are going under the hammer, and if you’ve got a nose for a bargain, there’s bound to be a steal or two here.

Rusk’s initial desire was to own one Cadillac from every year of production, but things got out of hand almost immediately. As the owner of Rusken Packaging, he was a well-known figure around town (of the town’s population of 20,000, 1200 are employed by Rusken), and he soon started buying cars in a way that shows the best kind of character you can find.Hagerty

People knew he was a collector and would occasionally approach him with a car they’d like to sell. Instead of asking what the price was, Rusk would ask, “Whatya need?” He’d then simply pay whatever was asked, especially if it emerged that the money was going to go towards essential needs like paying off medical bills or a mortgage.

Essentially, Rusk got to have those little thrills the rest of us get from buying a new Hot Wheels at the grocery store, but of a full-sized variety, combined with the warm feeling of helping out his community. However, with so many cars driven briefly and then tucked away, the collection is basically impossible to maintain. Housed in multiple buildings, there are as many as 1300 vehicles of every possible kind.Hagerty

Because of his no-haggle generosity when buying these cars, the collection has been dubbed the Generous Collection, and it’s going under the hammer at Broad Arrow Auctions, split into several chunks. There’s no reserve, so every single one of these machines is going home with someone.

The first batch, numbering 236 cars, is online now, with the auction lots set to conclude between next Monday and Thursday. There are some great machines up for grabs.HagertyHagerty

The Jaguar XK120 probably won’t be a bargain, as that’s a well-known and sought-after classic. However, how about a 1998 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 with just 52K miles on the odometer? If you don’t like that one, there are about a dozen other Firebirds of varying mileage and equipment.HagertyHagerty

There are not one, but two LS V-8-swapped second-generation RX-7s, and a number of tribute-style builds, including a 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 set up to look like a police cruiser from The Andy Griffith Show. There are plenty of big-body Mopar cars too, Chargers and Belvederes and the like. If you’re into oddballs, there’s a 1960 Rambler Metropolitan convertible in a cheery two-tone white and red, or a gloriously weird single-cylinder King Midget Model III.Hagerty

You can peruse all 236 listings here to find your own favorite or, should there be nothing tempting on the list yet, just wait until the next batch of cars comes through. You have to imagine Greg Rusk had all kinds of fun putting this collection together, getting to drive and own so many different types of cars. Now, part of that fun will be seeing these machines find new homes and owners.
