GST Council Meeting: New GST Rates – Small Cars, Luxury Cars, Bikes Under 350cc And Three-Wheelers Get Cheaper With New 18% GST Slab

Big win for budget buyers – small cars and commuter bikes get a GST slash just ahead of the festive season.

Your next car or bike just got cheaper! The GST Council has cut taxes on small cars, bikes up to 350cc, and three-wheelers to 18%, down from 28%. Kicking in from September 22, 2025, this festive-season gift will make entry-level rides more affordable, even as luxury cars and big bikes move into a steep new 40% slab, but will still attract a lesser tax. How? Read this story till the end to know more!

Small Cars, Bikes & Three-Wheelers Get A Tax Break

In a historic GST overhaul, the government has revised the GST rates for automobiles. This will bring entry-level hatchbacks, commuter bikes, and autorickshaws within the reach of consumers, in time for the festival season.

Under the new definition, small cars are petrol cars with a capacity of up to 1200cc or diesel cars up to 1500cc with a maximum length of 4000mm. These fall solidly into the 18% GST category.

To sum up, these are the vehicles that fall under the 18% GST slab:

  • Small cars, i.e. petrol engines up to 1200cc, diesel up to 1500cc, and length under 4000mm, like Maruti Dzire, Kia Syros, etc.
  • Motorcycles up to 350cc, like the Royal Enfield Bullet and the Royal Enfield Classic 350.
  • Three-wheelers
  • Hybrid cars, i.e. Petrol/LPG/CNG up to 1200cc or diesel up to 1500cc, under 4000m,m like Brezza S-CNG, Nexon CNG, and more.

Hybrid diesels and petrol hybrids (like Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Innova Hycross, and also the newly unveiled or upcoming Maruti Victoris), above these limits, however, move to the higher 40% bracket.

What Moves To The 40% Slab?

A new 40% slab for luxury and sin items has been introduced by the council.

This consists of:

  • Motorcycles with engine sizes above 350cc, like KTM Duke 390, Triumph Speed 400 and more
  • Large and mid-size cars, i.e. the ones exceeding 1200cc in petrol and 1500cc in diesel, with a length exceeding 4000mm, like Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and moreHyundai Creta front quarter image
  • Hybrids, i.e. Petro/LPG/CNG above 4000mm and 1200cc of displacement like the Maruti Grand Vitara, Honda City e:HEV, and also the new upcoming Maruti Victoris CNG Maruti Victoris rear
  • Aircraft, yachts, and other recreational vehicles for pleasure purposes

It’s not just mass market cars that are cheaper. Cars above 4 metres in length, and/or with engine capacity exceeding 1500cc will become more affordable too. Cars such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV700, Mahindra Scorpio N are set to benefit from this.

Earlier, these vehicles would have an effective tax of 50% including a 22% compensation cess. The GST reforms have eliminated the cess component entirely, and these cars will now be taxed at a flat 40% rate.

Consistency Across Commercial Vehicles & Parts

GST Council has also made taxes more simplified across commercial businesses:

  • Buses, trucks, and ambulances are now uniformly charged at 18% (previously 28%).
  • Auto parts are now bracketed in a single 18% rate, regardless of HS code classification.

This step is likely to reduce manufacturers’ and parts suppliers’ confusion, simplifying the supply chain.

Electric Vehicles Remain At 5%

Interestingly, nothing changes in the EV space. All electric vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers continue to benefit from the concessional 5% GST, maintaining them as the most tax-favoured mobility choice.

Tata Punch EV charging flap

While the bracket still remains at 5%, there’s no clarity about luxury EVs, nor a price cap defined.

Why Does It Matter For Buyers And The Industry?

The reduction in GST from 28% to 18% on small cars and commuter bikes is a 10 percentage point cut, and this could mean huge savings for consumers. A hatchback that costs Rs 6 lakh (ex-factory), for example, could now be up to Rs 60,000 cheaper following GST reductions.

Maruti Dzire front

For the automobile sector, which has been facing dull sales, it is a festival booster dose. Locally made cars and two-wheelers are likely to get a boost in demand, while luxury cars and premium cars are also getting cheaper, albeit by a lesser margin.

  • GST Rate Cut On Cars: Hyundai Creta, VW Virtus, Mahindra Thar Roxx, And More Will Get CHEAPER!
  • New GST Rates: GST Cuts on Large SUVs & Luxury Cars: Toyota Fortuner, Mercedes-Benz GLS, & More Will Become Affordable

When Do The Changes Kick In?

All the GST rate changes will be effective from September 22, 2025, a few weeks before the festival season.

All-in-all, if you are planning to buy a new vehicle, then things do look happier and you should definitely wait till the new GST regime kicks in. This should make our festive season lighter on our pockets and happier for our families.

Road Tax should be charged by the govt. on the base price (i.e. ex-factory price) not on the ex -showroom price as the road tax to be charged on the goods the car not on the GST part .

So does that mean, bigger cars like seltos or creta will now be ten percent cheaper?

Will the manufacturers allow to reach this benefit to the clients? If they hike the base price to profit more, it will be the same for the end user.

The first week of September 2025 was quite buzzing for the Indian automotive industry as it witnessed many launches and, most importantly, the revision in GST slabs

The first week of September 2025 was a rather busy one for the Indian automotive industry as it was a witness to a couple of launches and unveiling events. Another major update that turned out to be in favour of cars was the announcement of GST 2.0 or the new GST reforms. In this story, let’s quickly go through all the important car- and auto industry-related updates that we got to know in the first week of September 2025:

Maruti Victoris SUV Unveiled

Maruti Victoris

Maruti took the covers off its new SUV, the Victoris, as its new compact offering in the same segment as the Grand Vitara. It is a 5-seater SUV and is loaded with plenty of amenities, some of which are a first on a Maruti car too. During the revealing of the Victoris, it was also announced that the new Maruti SUV has also passed the Bharat NCAP crash tests with flying colours.

Citroen Basalt X Launched

The Citroen Basalt SUV-coupe recently got a new X variant in a similar way as was done with the C3 hatchback in August 2025. As part of the new trim, the Basalt comes with revised rates post GST revisions, a new cabin theme, and a fresh set of features too.

VinFast VF6 And VF7 SUVs Launched

VinFast VF7 and VF6

After revealing the VF6 and VF7 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in early 2025, VinFast has finally launched the two electric SUVs in India. Both are being locally produced at the EV maker’s facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. While the VF6 is available in three variants, the VF7 comes in a total of five. Comment end

Hyundai King And King Knight Editions Introduced

Hyundai Creta King variant

While Hyundai had already introduced the Knight editions of the Exter, Venue and Creta, the Korean carmaker has now launched the same for the i20, Creta Electric and Alcazar. Alongside the new Knight edition, Hyundai has also come out with a ‘King’ edition for the Creta to mark its 10-year anniversary in our markets. All special editions get a new paint option as part of the update as well as some feature additions (including even for the Creta N Line) for a premium over the respective variants they are based on.

Updated Honda Elevate Launched

As part of the festive season updates, Honda has upped the game of the Elevate compact SUV by giving it a couple of new cabin theme options (based on the variant chosen), along with a few fresh features too. That said, the updated SUV retains the same powertrain as before.

Kia Syros EV Spied

Following the launch of the Kia Syros in India, the carmaker seems to now be looking at introducing an all-electric version of the SUV on our shores. This can be attested by the recent spy shot of what seems to be the Syros EV that was spotted in India for the first time. It will be the third electric offering from Kia in India after the EV6 and recently launched Carens Clavis EV.

Maharashtra Government’s Big Decision For EVs

For those who are based in Maharashtra and own an electric vehicle, the state government has some good news. It has decided to entirely waive the toll tax for all EVs as a means to step up the adoption of electric cars in the state. That said, the toll waiver is applicable only to select highways and is being planned to be implemented on other state highways as well.

Supreme Court’s Call On E20 Petrol PIL

Supreme Court Rejects PIL Against E20 Petrol

Ever since the shift to E20 petrol (20 percent ethanol-blended fuel) was advanced from the earlier planned timeline of 2030 to 2025 recently, there have been plenty of debates stirring up online among the entire car fraternity, including existing owners. It had thus led to the filing of a public interest litigation (PIL) that challenged the government’s move to make E20 petrol the standard across India. We have now detailed what the Supreme Court’s rejection of the PIL means for car owners.

GST 2.0 And Its Impact On Cars

It was during the Independence Day 2025 speech when our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, gave the entire nation a piece of good news in the form of the soon-to-be-made revisions to GST slabs. Fast forward to September 2025, and we now know what the changes are, and especially how they impact all segments of cars, including the EVs.

The i20, i20 N Line, and Alcazar get new features, including a dashcam and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

  • Hyundai Creta Electric, Alcazar and i20 get new Knight Editions with all-black exterior and interior design with some brass-coloured elements in the cabin.

  • Even the Alcazar now gets a dashcam.
  • Price increment of the Knight Editions range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 35,000 based on the chosen model.

After the Hyundai Creta Electric was updated with new features, more claimed range and variants recently, the Korean carmaker has now launched a Knight Edition that is similar to the Creta, Venue and Exter. Not just this, but Hyundai launched the Knight Edition of even the Alcazar and i20, which have also received some feature updates, including wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a dashcam. The i20 N Line has also been updated with similar features.

Here’s a model-wise description of everything that is changed and new on the aforementioned Hyundai offerings in detail:

Hyundai Creta Electric Knight

Hyundai Creta Electric Knight Edition

The Hyundai Creta Electric was recently updated with three new variants, an added claimed range for both battery pack options and some new features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a dashcam.

Now, the carmaker has updated it with an all-black Knight Edition, which is similar to the ICE-powered Creta. As such, it gets the following exterior and interior design changes:

  • All-black alloy wheels

  • Black front and rear skid plates
  • Black roof rails
  • Black outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs)
  • Black roof-mounted spoiler
  • Matte black Hyundai logos outside

  • All-black interior with brass-coloured inserts
  • All-black seat upholstery with brass-coloured highlights
  • Metal pedals

Notably, the Creta Electric Knight Edition is based on the Excellence variants with both the 51.4 kWh and 42 kWh battery pack options. Here are the detailed prices of the Knight Edition:

Hyundai Alcazar Knight

The Hyundai Alcazar Knight Edition is based on the 7-seater version of the Signature trim and comes with the same exterior and interior design changes as the Creta Electric Knight Edition.

That being said, the regular Signature variant comes with a new dashcam feature in both 6- and 7-seater versions, along with the Knight Edition.

Here are the prices of the Alcazar Knight Edition in comparison to the regular Signature variant:

While the Hyundai Creta secured the top spot again, it was the Hyryder that was sold more than the Maruti Grand Vitara and Kia Seltos, helping it gain the 2nd spot

The compact SUV segment has been a highly contested segment for a long time now. The July 2025 sales data that has been revealed recently, also tells the same story, with the Hyundai Creta again becoming the bestseller, and the Toyota Hyryder following suit by gaining more sales than its Maruti Grand Vitara sibling. Here are the details:

Key Takeaways

  • The month of July 2025 was no different in terms of compact SUV sales compared to the previous months, as it saw the Hyundai Creta clinching the title of being the bestselling compact SUV again. The Korean carmaker sold 16,898 units of the SUV which included the sales of the Creta N Line and Creta Electric too. While its month-on-month (MoM) sales grey by 7 percent, its year-on-year (YoY) market share shot up by 4 percent.
  • The Toyota Hyryder secured the second spot with total sales and dispatches amounting to 8814 units, which is way more than the 5,000-unit average it has been selling for the past 6 months. Because of this, its MoM sales grew by over 18 percent.
  • The next spots were held by the Maruti Grand Vitara and Kia Seltos, both of which sold over 6,000 units in July 2025. However, while the Seltos recorded a 15 percent increase in monthly sales, the Grand Vitara’s sales declined by more than 6 percent.
  • The Tata Curvv SUV-coupe, which includes the sales numbers of its all-electric version too, crossed 2000 sales in July 2025, similar to that in June 2025. Its MoM sales and YoY market share declined at a negligible margin.
  • Both the Honda Elevate and Volkswagen Taigun crossed 1300 unit sales individually in July 2025. However, the Honda SUV recorded more than 14 percent decline in monthly sales, but for the Taigun, the MoM numbers increased by over 13 percent.
  • The Skoda Kushaq was the next in line, and while it failed to cross the 1000 sales mark, the MoM sales increase was similar to the Volkswagen Taigun sibling at over 13 percent.
  • The Citroen Basalt SUV-coupe and Citroen Aircross SUV were the next in line, followed by the MG Astor that took the last spot in the segment’s sales. The Basalt and Astor faced a heavy decline in sales, but the Aircross managed to add some more unit sales in July 2025. However, the Aircross could still not cross the 100 sales mark yet again.
