On winding back roads, the SL 43 continues to impress. Despite its weight, it retains much of the agility and balance of its V8-powered siblings. The front end is exceptionally grippy, and the steering is precise and responsive, allowing for confident cornering with minimal body roll. Remarkably, it achieves this level of performance without the benefit of adaptive dampers or other advanced suspension technologies. This is a testament to the underlying chassis design and the effectiveness of the standard suspension setup.

However, the SL 43 falters in areas where a grand touring convertible should excel: effortless cruising and relaxed comfort. While the engine sounds exciting in Sport+ mode, it never truly quiets down in Comfort mode. The high-strung nature of the engine becomes apparent at stoplights, where unwanted vibrations can be felt throughout the car.

Around town, the powertrain calibration feels unrefined. The throttle response can be overly sensitive, even in the most relaxed setting, making smooth starts difficult. The nine-speed transmission sometimes hesitates to downshift when a sudden burst of acceleration is needed, leaving the engine feeling out of sync. As a result, the SL 43 lacks the dual-personality of the SL 55 and SL 63. It’s a blast to drive at high speeds, but less enjoyable during everyday driving. Owners considering the SL 43 in cities like Los Angeles, California or Miami, Florida, where they’ll likely encounter heavy stop-and-go traffic, should note this potential issue.

Design, Interior, and Overall Value

Beyond the powertrain, the SL 43 remains a solid package. The exterior design is virtually unchanged, with the same stunning proportions and athletic stance. Minor updates include slightly revised bumpers and rounded exhaust tips, but only the most discerning eye will notice the differences. This is a major advantage for buyers who appreciate the SL’s aesthetics but were previously deterred by its high price. The SL 43 opens up the luxury roadster market to a new segment of buyers.

The interior is equally impressive, mirroring the design and materials found in the more expensive SL models. The SL 43’s cabin showcases Mercedes’ expertise in crafting world-class interiors. The availability of the same high-quality materials and features as the more expensive models further enhances its appeal.

The critical question for potential buyers is whether the price discount justifies the trade-offs. For example, consider a SL 43 with an as-tested price of around $120,000. That’s roughly $100,000 less than a comparably equipped SL 63. Yet, the SL 43 offers the same stunning looks, a similarly luxurious interior, and a surprisingly engaging driving experience. It opens the door to SL ownership for a wider audience.

The Verdict: Potential Realized, but Refinement Needed

The Mercedes-AMG SL 43 is not without its flaws. The powertrain calibration issues detract from its overall refinement. However, these are issues that Mercedes-AMG can address with future software updates and revisions.
