The Acura ZDX Is Dead; Here’s How to Get a Deal on the Last Ones

- For a second time, the Acura ZDX is dead. The first-generation model lasted only for the 2010-13 model years, but it was funky and weird. Nobody quite knew what to make of it, and almost nobody bought one. The latest one was an all-electric SUV made in a joint venture with GM; it shared a lot of its bits with the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Cadillac Lyriq. And according to Automotive News, it has apparently only made it just one model year, 2024, as Acura announced it has again ended production of the nameplate. Swoopy Honda-GM electric SUV mashup,

But if you simply must have one of Acura’s few remaining ZDXs, the brand wants to make a sweet deal with you. Through Nov. 3, Acura will give you $4,000 off a new ZDX in one of three ways: as a loyal Acura owner, as a conquest customer or put toward a returning lease. If you act before Sept. 30, you may also qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit atop that, making the deal even better.
However, there’s a caveat: You won’t find these incentives listed on the Acura website. Instead, you’ll have to talk to a dealer directly for more information about them. And Acura’s incentives look set to continue after the federal credit expires, likely in a move to clear dealer lots of any remaining inventory — of which there really isn’t much. According to a search on Cars.com for new ZDXs, only 194 are currently in stock on dealer lots at the time of writing, and given that Acura said production has ended (not will end), it’s unlikely any more are coming.

It’ll be your last shot to get an Acura electric vehicle for a while, too, but the company said in a statement that a new EV is coming. It will be based on the RSX Prototype unveiled this past summer, built in Ohio and arriving in the second half of 2026. Additional hybrid-electric models will also be showing up, according to the company.

All-wheel drive is available on a wider variety of vehicles these days, including a substantial share of new electric vehicles. That’s not only due to the popularity of AWD, but possibly also because adding AWD is simpler for an EV, with software managing the power split between the electric motors on each axle and no need for a mechanical connection from front to rear. AWD in an EV has real advantages, including improved traction, more power and more driving fun — at least with better systems designed for performance-oriented power splitting.

Do You Really Need AWD for an EV?
Some EVs, such as the current base Tesla Model S, are offered only with dual-motor AWD, and some systems don’t stop at two motors. With the top versions of the Rivian R1T pickup and R1S SUV, AWD literally means all wheels since there is a separate electric motor on each wheel. Additionally, EVs such as the GMC Hummer EV and Tesla’s Model S and Model X Plaid performance models have AWD using one motor in front and two in the back (one for each rear wheel, eliminating the need for a rear differential).
But as with gasoline vehicles, AWD in an EV is not a free ride. It costs more to buy, and it costs more to drive, thanks to the system’s extra weight. The added complexity and equipment means you have more parts and systems to maintain, further adding to cost of ownership.
AWD also raises some issues specific to EVs. For an equivalent battery size, the weight of the AWD setup can cut the range of an EV – a critical spec for a lot of buyers. For example, a Hyundai Ioniq 6 Long Range sedan with 18-inch wheels and a 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery has an EPA-rated range of 342 miles with rear-wheel drive and 316 miles with AWD. That’s because the EPA-rated efficiency — how much electricity you use to go a given distance — is 26 kWh per 100 miles with RWD (132 mpg-equivalent in combined driving) and 28 kWh per 100 miles with AWD (121 mpg-e combined).
The efficiency difference means more stops on a road trip and more frequent charging in general. It also means a higher cost to drive, even if it’s still less than gasoline, plus a penalty in charging time since a less-efficient EV is adding fewer miles in the same time.
Is AWD for an EV worth it? If you live in Chicago, sure. If you live in Miami, it’s maybe not so easy to justify.

Kia is betting it all on black, making its X-Line appearance package standard equipment on the highest trim levels across the Sorento lineup — gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The 2025 plug-in hybrid’s range-topping SX Prestige trim is renamed X-Line SX Prestige for 2026 and embellishes the three-row SUV with dark-gray and black accents on the front and rear bumpers, window trim and wheels. Otherwise, there are no major changes to the Sorento PHEV for 2026, and the base price increases only $300 from 2025.

Release Date and Pricing
The 2026 Kia Sorento Plug-In Hybrid is on sale now. Like the regular Sorento Hybrid, the PHEV is only available in two of the priciest, most luxurious of the gas-only Sorento’s trims, EX and X-Line SX Prestige. Pricing for the Sorento PHEV is as follows:
- EX: $49,735
- X-Line SX Prestige: $54,935
For comparison, the gas-powered Sorento starts at $39,735 and the Sorento Hybrid at $40,335.
Trim Levels
While Kia asks nearly $50,000 for the Sorento PHEV, the three-row SUV does come well equipped, even in entry-level EX form. The EX rides on 19-inch wheels and features LED front exterior lighting, heated side mirrors, a power liftgate, keyless entry and starting, and remote start. Its cabin is upholstered in synthetic leather and boasts a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and eight-way power passenger seat (both heated), dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless phone charging, six speakers, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Kia’s Drive Wise safety suite is standard on the 2026 Sorento PHEV, but the exact contents vary depending on trim level. In the EX, Drive Wise includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering, blind spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, a driver-attention monitor and automatic high beams.
Buyers who upgrade to the X-Line SX Prestige get the black exterior trim including black 19-inch wheels, plus rain-sensing windshield wipers, a panoramic moonroof, LED taillights and Digital Key 2.0, which allows owners to use a paired smartphone as the vehicle key and to remotely monitor the vehicle. Inside, the X-Line SX Prestige includes perforated leather upholstery, 14-way power driver’s and 10-way passenger seats with ventilation, a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-speaker Bose surround-sound system.
For the X-Line SX Prestige, Kia adds forward cross-traffic alert, blind spot intervention, emergency steering assist, side parking sensors, reverse automatic braking, a 360-degree parking camera and blind spot cameras.

Powertrain Specs and MPG
The Sorento PHEV combines a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a potent electric motor to generate a total of 261 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque. (That’s the same torque output as the Sorento Hybrid but an additional 34 hp.) Like the hybrid, the PHEV routes its power through a six-speed automatic transmission, but all-wheel drive is standard.
Kia says the 2026 Sorento PHEV can travel up to 31 miles on electricity alone and returns the same EPA-rated 33/33/33 mpg city/highway/combined as the 2025 model with its gas engine running.
